Panchayat polls in Barak Valley on 9th December; counting on 12th

After months of dilly-dallying Panchayat elections are set to take off in the panchayat areas of Assam. The Assam State Election Commission has announced that the voters in Assam will cast their votes in two phases. Phase one of polling will be conducted on December 5, 2018, and phase two on December 9. On 12th of the same month, the ballot boxes will be opened for counting. 
 
Barak Valley voters will cast their votes in the second phase of polling on December 9, 2018. Secretary of the state election commission in a media statement said, “This is for information of all concerned that the Assam State Election Commission is going to complete the conduct of the ensuing Panchayat Election latest by 15th December 2018, keeping in view the Constitution mandate and orders of the Hon’ble High Court dated 9th October 2018 in Case No. IA (C) 3439/2018 and IA (C) 3121/2018. pursuant to a discussion with the Education Department and other concerned Government Departments and authorities, the State Election Commission has already requested the Education Department to arrange the holding of examinations in the schools and Colleges after 15th of December, 2018.”
 
The notice further read, “All Schools. Colleges and University authorities are, therefore, requested to schedule the examinations (to be held in the month of December 2018) after 15th December 2018. All the educational authorities and the public are humbly requested to cooperate with the Assam State Election Commission in the interest of smooth conduct of the ensuing elections to the Panchayats which are grass-root institutions of the Indian Republic.”
