A bribe of Rs 5000 to issue Labour License; Here's how Sribas Ghosh of PWRD Silchar was caught red-handed

Today, the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Unit of the Government of Assam caught Sribas Ghosh red-handed. Muster Roll employee in the Office of the Executive Engineer, PWRD, Silchar and Udharbond Territorial Road Division, Sribas Ghosh had demanded a bribe of Rs 5000 from a resident who went to the office to geet the Labour License.

Unwilling to pay the bribe, the resident contacted Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Unit. The unit had set a trap. It had put chemicals on the notes and so, when the employee accepted the notes, he got caught red-handed.

Issuing a press statement about the same, the department stated, “A complaint was received at this Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption, Assam, alleging that Shri Sribas Ghosh, Muster Roll Employee in the office of the Executive Engineer, PWRD, Silchar & Udharbond Territorial Road Division, District- Silchar, demanded Rs. 5,000/- as bribe from the complainant for processing the issue of Labour License to the complainant.”

It adds, “The complainant approached this Directorate for taking necessary legal action against the above-mentioned public servant. Accordingly, a trap was laid today, on 05/11/2022 by a team from the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti Corruption, Assam, in the premises of the office of the Executive Engineer, PWRD, Silchar & Udharbond Territorial Road Division, District- Silchar. Shri Sribas Ghosh, was caught red-handed at 1:45 PM, immediately after he accepted Rs. 5,000/- (five thousand only) as a bribe from the complainant. The tainted bribe money was immediately recovered from his possession and accordingly seized in presence of independent witnesses.”

The department informed that a case has been registered in AB Police Station on 05/11/2022 vide ACB P.S. Case No. 53/2022 U/S 7(a) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (as amended in 2018) against Sribas Ghosh.
