ABVP Burns Effigy of Mamta Banerjee in Silchar; Protests Against TMC Govt for Sandeshkhali

Today in Silchar, on March 7, students from various colleges, affiliated with the student association known as Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), gathered outside the DC Office in protest. They voiced their grievances against the Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, and her government’s purported involvement in unlawful activities in the Sandeshkhali area of the North 24 Parganas district.

According to reports, women in the region have been enduring constant sexual assault from individuals allegedly associated with the Mamata government. Additionally, families of these women are said to be systematically harassed. In a memorandum addressed to the President of India through the DC Cachar, the students highlighted that these actions are being carried out by criminals sheltered by the state government.

“The ABVP is deeply saddened by this appalling incident, which brings shame to humanity, and strongly condemns it,” read the memorandum. The students hope that their memorandum, submitted through the DC Cachar, will reach the hands of President of India, Droupadi Murmu, to ensure justice for the women affected in the Sandeshkhali area.

Tushar Ghose, a student activist from ABVP, addressed the media, explaining their motive behind the agitation. He claimed that ABVP has always stood in support of women’s dignity, regardless of any government’s attempts to violate it. The protest also featured slogans against CM Mamata Banerjee and her government, alongside patriotic chants, common protesting slogans, and chants of “Jai Shree Ram.”

The students did not stop at chanting and protesting or submitting memoranda; they also took another step by burning an effigy of CM Mamata Banerjee. They held it high while chanting slogans against Mamata Banerjee and her government, echoing throughout the entire area.

Sandeshkhali, an island in the Sundarbans, has become the focal point of a nationwide political debate. ABVP activists from across the country are also joining the protest and raising their voices for the Sandeshkhali region. The political debate began on February 15 when a woman accused the TMC government of involvement in sexual abuse against women. She reported the matter to the police station, and shortly afterward, her house was attacked.

CM Mamata Banerjee maintains her stance that her state is the safest for women and accuses the BJP of spreading fake news about Sandeshkhali. According to her claims, everything the nation is hearing about Sandeshkhali is fabricated news concocted by the BJP.

Mamta Banerjee’s statement comes a day after PM Modi met with the woman who accused the former TMC leader Sheikh Shahjahan of allegedly sexually assaulting women in Sandeshkhali. The woman currently states that she is living in fear. According to BJP sources, the PM also met with some of the victims of this alleged incident.
