ACKHSA organises condolence meet in memory of Professor Subir Kar
A condolence meeting was held in Silchar on Sunday in memory of noted academician and former head of the Department of Bengali, Assam University — Subir Kar, who passed away earlier this month.
Kar, who battled with cancer for a long time before breathing his last at Silchar Medical College and Hospital on the night of February 6, was 78 and is survived by his wife Shukla Kar and many other relatives.
The meeting, which was organised by the All Cachar Karimganj Hailakandi Students’ Association (ACKHSA), witnessed personalities from various circles expressing deep sorrow over the demise and conveyed their condolences to the deceased’s family members.
ACKHSA adviser Rupam Nandi Purkayastha said Kar had contributed a lot to the progress and development of Barak Valley and his demise has created a vacuum which can never be filled.
“Kar had played an active role in many movements for the interests of the people of Barak Valley. He was truly an inspiration,” he said.
Former vice-chancellor of Assam University Tapodhir Bhattacharjee recollected his memories with Kar from the past and shared some golden moments of nostalgia, while speaking about the erudite personality.
Bhattacharjee showered praises on Kar for his contributions in the field of education and literature.
Former professor of Gurucharan College Niranjan Dutta said the ACKHSA should take the responsibility of publishing the unpublished writings of Kar and give him a tribute in real sense.
“Kar had many writings which were not published. Publishing them and making them reach to readers will be the real tribute to the great man. The ACKHSA should take necessary initiatives in this regard,” he said.
Former student of Assam varsity Manoranjan Sutradhar, ACKHSA members Sukamal Das, Joyshree Nath along with members from Subir Kar’s family including Subrata Kar and Sitanath Kar were also present.
