After a section of road got washed away, administration decides to shut Shillong Road for vehicular traffic
Heavy rains have pummeled Meghalaya and Assam for a few days, as a result, the motorways have sustained heavy damage. One such road is the NH06 or Shillong Road. Heavy Motor Vehicles were already forbidden to pass as of 19th June, 9 A.M and according to Abhilash Baranwal, DC, Khliehriat (East Jaintia Hills) Light Motor Vehicles will be unable to pass as well.
The DC has also estimated that the road will be closed for a day or two as the rain will make it difficult to fix it. He has assured that PWD and other concerned authorities have already been informed of the situation and the reconstruction of the road is on its way.
Earlier, on 15th June, the East Jaintia Hills Police had already alerted passengers to avoid taking the NH06 route due to flash floods. In fact, there was a landslide near Sonapur village which left a few passengers stranded on the road. The authorities have already cleared the landslide but the road itself has sustained heavy damage and is not safe for travel at the moment.
The letter issued by the Deputy Commissioner’s Office States, “Due to continuous heavy rainfall over the last week, NH-06 has been damaged at multiple locations across the district especially from Nongsning to Ratacherra stretch. A section of NH-6 near the Lumshnong Toll Plaza has also been washed away. Members of public are hereby advised to avoid unnecessary travel along that stretch. In cases of emergency also, they should observe utmost caution while travelling through NH 06 in that section till further update about the restoration of the road.”
