After attempting airlift against medical advice, Pramoth Misra dies at SMCH

68-year-old, Pramoth Kumar Misra who was admitted in the Central ICU of Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) with post Covid complications. The family members going against the medical advice decided to airlift the patient for Bhubaneswar. The Air Ambulance was supposed to land yesterday and airlift the patient. But due to bad weather it decided against landing. Today, the second attempt was made and the patient was transferred from the ICU to the airport at 2:30 pm.

A green corridor was facilitated for quick transportation of the patient. Upon reaching the airport, the patient’s oxygen saturation level dropped and the medical team in the air ambulance decided against taking the risk. Considering the life risk, the patient was again brought to Silchar Medical College and Hospital.

Vice principal of SMCH, Dr. Bhaskar Gupta said that the patient was presented to the hospital at around 5:30 pm and his oxygen saturation level was below 70%. “The patient was immediately rushed to the Central ICU and at 6:20 pm he has breathed his last.”

In the medical bulletin issued by the vice principal and professor Dr. Gupta, it is mentioned that the patient was suffering from post Covid-19 complications. Misra was first admitted to the Covid ICU and then after testing negative on RT-PCR, on May 10, the doctors decided to shift the patient to Central ICU. The patient has been on oxygen support since the very beginning. The doctors at SMCH had advised against airlifting the patient as he was in need of constant oxygen.

On May 30, after receiving a letter from the patient’s daughter, deputy commissioner of Cachar, Keerthi Jalli allowed the Air Ambulance to land and asked the Superintendent of Police, Cachar to facilitate a green corridor. In the letter issued by DC, it was mentioned that “The expenses are being borne by the patient’s family who is also making the choice of shifting the patient despite medical advice from SMCH, taking the onus of entire responsibility knowing the condition of the patient may deteriorate after removing from ICU services of SMCH against medical advice.”
