DC Hailakandi, Rohan Kumar Jha has ordered the Circle Officer of Lala to administer an inquiry into the circumstances that led to the encounter of Abdul Ahad Choudhury.

Choudhury, a resident of Sutarkandi in Karimganj district died during an encounter with the Police under the jurisdiction of Lala Circle Officer. On May 1 (April 30), according to the SP of Hailakandi, Abdul Ahad Choudhury opened fire at the officials when they were chasing him. The Police resorted to retaliatory firing during which, Choudhury sustained injuries and eventually succumbed to bullet injuries.

The encounter raised many eyebrows and Abdul Ahad Choudhury’s family raised many questions against the chain of events. Abdul Ahad Choudhury is linked with illegal transportation of Coal and was arrested in the past. He was acquitted in some cases while granted bail on others.

There are rumours doing rounds suggesting that Deputy Commissioner Rohan Kumar Jha was compelled to order a probe because of the controversy around the encounter. However, speaking with Barak Bulletin, Jha puts speculations to bed. “Yes, the Lala Circle Officer has been ordered to administer a probe. But this is a routine exercise. It is the rule to initiate a magistrate inquiry into all encounters and we are just following the rule,” said DC Haialkandi.
