Alleged “mastermind” behind ‘Burmese Supari Syndicate’ Nayan Ghosh escorted to Cachar; Police investigation is on

Known as one of the masterminds behind the illegal transportation of Burmese betel nuts from other countries to various parts of India, Nayan Ghosh was detained by Paltan Bazar Police yesterday from a hotel in Ulubari.

Today morning, he has been escorted to Dholai Police Station in Cachar district. A special unit of Cachar Police rushed to Guwahati and escorted him to Dholai. He is now being interrogated by the Police officials.

Sources in the Police informed that a case has been lodged against him in Dholai Police Station. The case has been registered against him under section 21 (C) NDPS ACT, 120B, 420, 379, 411 IPC.

Sources also informed that the case was lodged against him after a bus MZ 05 A049 was detained by Police in Dholai. The bus, according to available information, carried Burmese betelnuts from Mizoram and had entered Assam through Lailapur.

It is worth mentioning here that chasing the Police vehicles, one car reached Dholai. A woman and a young boy travelled in the car and started interacting with the Police officials. When the media contingent present there asked them if they are related to Nayan Ghosh, they misbehaved with the journalists using words like “nonsense” and rushed away. There is no clue who they are and where they came from.

For now, the Police is maintaining distance with the media and the superintendent of Police is likely to brief the media on the issue.
