Alleged paranormal activities in rural Cachar; Locals say they’re spending sleepless nights

“Paranormal activities” in rural Cachar has taken led to hysteria among the villagers of Subedarbasti. The villagers are sleepless since many nights and rumours of their village being haunted have spread far and wide in the Valley. This small village is almost 30 kilometres away from Silchar town and falls under the Borkhola assembly constituency. The people there complain that there have been stone pelting on their homes from some invisible energy which led to the spread of fear. Even though the villagers have come out to guard their homes, this didn’t stop. Two people in the village have allegedly become possessed by the spirit of the ghost.

This incident happened in a village in the Badarpur-Masimpur GP of Borkhola in Subedarbasti village. All this started days before the Durga Puja this year when one night the villagers heard someone pelting stones on their tin roof at around 9 at night. At first, they thought this to be some thieves or miscreants just trying to disturb the villagers. But suspicion grew when the same happened the following nights as well. According to villagers, every night the stone pelting started at around 9 at night and continued for hours. No one could see where the stones came from or who was behind this. The stone pelting happened like rainfall on some nights and the glass of the window pane of many houses shattered due to this rain of stones. People of the villagers do not come out of their home after it is dark.

A villager who is also a victim of the destruction of the property said, “Our boys and men of the neighbourhood started to guard the village after the stone shower repeated for some nights. But to our surprise, nothing changed and the stone pelting continued. One night while searching for a source behind this, one boy ran towards one tilla (hillock) which is also covered in bushes and trees. He saw two men there pelting stones, when he came near, he saw two men they even chased him. He somehow ran to the village to save his life. Later he fainted”.

When he came back to his senses, he started acting abnormally. The villager further said, “He was possessed by the ghost who was attacking us. Later we took him to the Mian Sahab (Islamic Shaman) of the neighbouring village who said he was attacked by two jinns (demonic spirits in the Islamic faith). The Mian Sahab’s tried to contact the jinns, he asked us to worship and start kirtan in the Shiv temple in the village which was almost abandoned for years”.

Accordingly, the villagers started their worship in the village temple and last Monday they also started the kirtan and started the worship with full grandeur. “Since the puja started”, the locals said, “the impact of the spirits’ wrath has reduced. We will continue this worship and hopefully the spirits will be calmed and the stone pelting won’t happen again”. A total of two-person were possessed according to the locals there, one is a girl. After the puja, both of them have become better and are living a normal life, said a senior citizen of the same village.

There is a scientific divide when it comes to spirits, ghosts and such “paranormal activities”. All the claims in this whole incident is what has been reported to us by the villagers. The visuals of stone pelting and windowpanes being shattered were confirmed by Ahadul Ahmed who reported this story.
