Ambicapatty Drunk Driving: AUS MBA Student Admitted at AIIMS, Justice Demanded
A final-year MBA student of Assam University, Rozy Deb from Ambicapatty, Silchar was seriously injured after being allegedly run over by a drunk driver at Ambicapatty Chowringhee on 28 March. The incident has triggered outrage among students, who have demanded justice and accountability. According to her classmates, her lower body has been paralysed following the accident.
According to reports, the scooter she was riding collided head-on with a four-wheeler. Eyewitnesses have alleged that the car was overspeeding and that the occupants were under the influence of alcohol. The driver was arrested in connection with the incident but was allegedly released the very next day, raising concerns among the student community.
Students from the MBA department have visited the office of the Senior Superintendent of Police on Wednesday (April 1) and submitted a memorandum, seeking immediate action. In the memorandum, they described the incident as serious and unfortunate, highlighting that Rozy Deb is currently undergoing treatment for multiple medical complications. They urged the authorities to conduct a prompt, fair and transparent investigation and to ensure accountability for any negligence or wrongdoing.
The memorandum further requested authorities to extend all possible support for her ongoing medical treatment and to implement stronger safety measures in the area to prevent such incidents in the future. The students stated that as an academic institution, they are committed to safeguarding the well-being of students and expect the same level of responsibility from the authorities. They also expressed solidarity with Rozy Deb and her family during this difficult time.
An eyewitness, speaking to the media on 1 April, gave a detailed account of the incident. She said that she was returning after taking medicine when she noticed a speeding car that hit the scooter. She described the impact as horrifying, stating that the car not only struck the scooter but also ran over it. The victim was left on the ground screaming, and another toto was also damaged during the incident.
The eyewitness further alleged that there were three young men inside the car, one driving and two seated in the back. She claimed that all of them were drunk and that alcohol bottles were found inside the vehicle. She added that the incident occurred around 9:40 pm and said she is still traumatised by what she witnessed. Raising a serious concern, she questioned why there were no police personnel present at Chowringhee, especially considering it was the night of Basanti Puja Dashami when many people were out celebrating. She emphasised that police presence could have ensured better safety, particularly on a night when many individuals consume alcohol.
Another MBA student who knew Rozy Deb told the media that she had received her placement offer letter from the department’s placement cell today, making the situation even more tragic. Students have warned that if justice is not delivered, they will organise larger protests in the coming days.
It has also been highlighted that Rozy Deb is the sole breadwinner of her family, intensifying the impact of the incident on her dependents.
The case has once again brought attention to the issue of road safety and enforcement during festive occasions. The question remains why there were no traffic police deployed at a busy junction like Ambicapatty Chowringhee, particularly on the night of Basanti Puja Dashami. In recent times, celebrations often involve alcohol consumption, and incidents of drunk driving continue to pose a serious threat. This raises a pressing concern for the administration about whether adequate monitoring and preventive measures are being implemented to avoid such tragedies.
