Another case of snatching in Silchar; SP says there is a vacuum in Police due to the ongoing transfers
Two days in a row, more than five times this month. Silchar is witnessing alarming high rates of snatching in broad daylight. Today a Life Insurance Corporation employee, Nabarun Goswami was walking with Rs 1 lakh cash which he had withdrawn from the UBI branch in Hailakandi road, Silchar. While he was walking, two bikers with their helmets on snatched the bag and raced away. The incident took place right at the heart of the town and that too in a busy hour.
A similar incident had taken place yesterday right opposite Bramhanbarriar Sweet shop, where a couple of snatchers following the exact same pattern, snatched away Rs 2 lakh which the victim had withdrawn from the bank. If we go back a few days, a similar incident took place in Vivekananda Road, Silchar, where a man lost close to Rs 1 lakh. A policeman was riding to Sadar Thana with Rs 7.5 lakh in a bag and snatchers chased him and snatched away the whole amount.
Several such cases took place in the heart of Silchar and while each and every victim file an FIR, the Police is yet to arrest anyone. “See, there is a series of transfers happening in Cachar which has created a huge vacuum in Cachar Police. 48 senior inspectors have been transferred from Cachar Police while only 7 or 8 have joined so far,” says MugdhaJyoti Dev Mahanta, SP, Cachar Police.
Speaking about the ongoing instances of snatching the SP mentioned, “It is the worst scenario”. The newly transferred SP, Mahanta mentioned that flying squads and patrolling near banks are essential to stop the serial snatching in Silchar. He also added that the Police have spoken to the traffic department and asked the traffic police officials to be cautious, “I told them, the moment they see anyone suspicious they have all the right to search them,” adds the SP.
He said, the vacuum in Cachar Police will get filled within a week and then the Police will be in a much better spot to tackle the snatchers.
