Another chit fund in Silchar; Sibotosh Debroy looted lakhs from people
People in desperate need for money again became a soft target of a chit fund company in Silchar. An organisation titled Debroy Syndicate & Services, operating from the first floor of Hrishi Mallhar building in Radhamadhab Road Silchar looted plenty for people seeking loans to bail themselves out of financial crisis.
Sibotosh Debroy, the proprietor of the fraudulent firm and a serial offender assured loans to applicants with low CIBIL (credit) score. He claimed his firm to be an agent of Fintech company Lendingkart and Aditya Birla Capital’s My Universe. “He assured me a quick disbursal and since I was in urgent need of money, I applied. He charged me Rs 32,000 as registration fees which include other miscellaneous charges, he also collected many documents and made an agreement,” informs Shamim Akhtar Barbhuiiya.
Akhtar’s requirement was a little over Rs 5,00,000 and according to him, there are hundreds of applicants whom he charged a handsome amount as registration fees. Akhtar paid him the money and submitted all the necessary documents in March 2018 and Debroy assured him a disbursal within a month. “But he kept delaying and making excuses. He said my loan, which was supposed to be disbursed from Lendingkart will now be processed by My Universe, but nothing happened for months,” adds Akhtar.
Later on, the applicants reached out to Lendingkart to find that Debroy was red-listed as a fraud by the Ahmedabad based digital lending company. He had no authorisation with Aditya Birla either and that triggered a sense of doubt in the applicants’ mind. That is when they started asking Debroy to return their money. “After Puja it would be done, after election, it would be done… was the type of assurances he used to give us. A week earlier he called us to say that tomorrow you all come to my office and I will disburse your loan. We all went to his office at 12:00 noon and waited till 7 in the evening, he did not come nor did he pick our calls,” informs Akhtar.
But that evening something bizarre happened, at 7:30 PM Debroy called them and asked each one of them to write their address on a 10 rupee note and send a snapshot to him, “We all wondered what is this new trick! After thinking for a while we wrote our address on the note and sent it to him, he replied to our message by saying he would send cash at our home the very next day, nothing happened till date,” says Akhtar.
Today Akhtar along with Biplab Chakraborty and few others went to his office and asked for him, his office boy said he is not in. That is when they left leaving an unfamiliar face behind who called them the moment Debroy reached his office. All the present applicants confronted him and asked for their money and documents, he kept on giving excuses and later refused to return any money sighting protocols. That is when the applicants lost their composure and manhandled Debroy, later the Police was informed and he was handed over to the Rangirkhari outpost. The officer-in-charge of Rangirkhari said the Police will look into the matter in details once an FIR is lodged.
