Another Neurosurgical success for SMCH; Dr. Sambuddha Dhar leads brain surgery of 5-year-old
Adding another feather to the achievement of Silchar Medical College’s successful Neurosurgical record, sensitive and complex brain surgery has been successfully performed in Silchar Medical College and Hospital on May 23.
A five-year-old child with a Brain Abscess condition went through a successful surgery, and the young patient is doing fine now. The patient was diagnosed with an abscess in the left prefrontal cortex part of the brain.
Neurosurgeon Dr. Sambuddha Dhar, who led the operation, said, “Nearly 70-80 ml pus has been extracted from the part of that patient’s brain.” He added, “If it remains untreated, it can be fatal. However, we are not sure how this condition triggered in the patient’s brain; generally, an abscess in the heart or lung may spread to the brain,” the surgeon told Barak Bulletin.
A brain abscess is a pus-filled swelling in the brain. It usually occurs when bacteria or fungi enter the brain tissue after an infection or severe head injury.
In this case, the operation was necessary, and the surgeons had to perform a craniotomy. It is the surgery that is performed inside the cranium or our skull. Specialized types of equipment are used to remove the bone flap, and the pus has been extracted.
