Another Road Accident: Sonai Youth killed in a head-on collision between two bikes, two injured
A young boy was killed in a head-on collision between two bikes in front of Sonai Madhab Chandra Das College. The incident took place at around 10 am on Saturday when a local youth, Iqbal Hussain Majumder, got seriously injured in a head-on collision with a motorbike coming from the opposite direction. Hussain was on his way to Sonai Bazar with his brother as a pillion passenger on his bike. He was rushed to a local hospital where doctors declared him dead.
Witnesses said that the two motorcycles collided head-on at high speeds, injuring the occupants and causing them to fall on the road due to the massive frontal impact as a result of the collision.
The people of the area immediately gathered at the spot there and tried to pick them up. Iqbal received the most injuries of all while his brother Zaidul Haque Majumder also got injured. The bike rider coming from the opposite direction, Mangi Singh, was also injured as a result of the impact.
The deceased Iqbal was identified as Abdul Khalik Majumder’s son, a resident of Berabak village in Sonai. He is about twenty years old and was going to Sonai Bazar for some chores along with his brother when the ill-fated collision occured. His death has cast a shadow of mourning in the area. There have been several accidents in the Sonai area in the last few days and many in fact have lost their lives.
It has been observed that there’s a sudden surge in the number of accidents during this winter season. We have had a great number of people losing their lives in Barak Valley due to road accidents recently, a dangerous trend which was not seen before in the place. One of the reasons is over speeding beyond the imposed limits. The transport department has started to take some steps after several people were killed in a spree of road accidents in Kalain. However, after Kalain, the highest number of road accidents are occuring in the Sonai-Kabuganj area. According to the transport department, if necessary, their operation will start there as well.
People feel that making sudden occasional checks by the transport department might not reduce the intensity of accidents. To avoid them completely we need a strict vigilance mechanism to check if the drivers of the Valley are really capable enough of having the driving licenses they hold. Often drivers are seen not following the rules of the road, overtaking at high speeds when on blind turns, being on the wrong side of the divider, using high beams at night in front of other vehicles or even not maintaining adequate distance when ahead of another vehicle. Certainly Barak Valley drivers who possess a driving license are supposed to know all these rules and regulations as they are tested before getting a license. But turns out it’s not the case like in other big cities. Only a strict vigilance mechanism to check the capabilities of drivers can ensure safety at roads.
