Apollo Club Silchar replaces disposable dishes with banana-leaves; "Plastic is today's mahishashur" says member

Apollo Club, located in Meherpur is one of the highest spending Durga Puja Committees in that part of the Silchar town. Every year, this club’s Durga Puja attracts thousands of visitors from all across the district. On Maha Nabami ‘Maha Prasad’ is distributed among thousands of devotees.

This year too it was no different. More than 1500 devotees were distributed prasad today. However, the Puja committee took a major step to ensure that they are not causing harm to nature. The Puja committee has replaced disposable plates that are made of single-use plastic with eco-friendly banana leaves.

A member of the Puja Committee, Joydeep Chakraborty said that the committee believes “Plastic is modern-day Mahishashur (devil) and needs to vanish from the planet.” He also added that this initiative taken by the Apollo club will send a message to the nearby Puja pandals which still use single-use-plastic made disposable plates to distribute food.

Dr. Kallol Bhattacharjee is the president of the Apollo Club Durga Puja committee while Amit Goala is the general secretary.

It is worth mentioning here that DC, Cachar Laya Madduri had requested each and every Puja committees in Silchar to avoid single-use plastic and thermocol for decoration or distribution of prasad.
