APSC topper Maria Tanim breaks silence, says she left her matrimonial home by choice
First her father was physically assaulted then an FIR was filed against her parents accusing them of breaking a married life. Her private life was brought on the roads by her husband Aziz Khan (Mithu) and his brother AIUDF MLA Azad Ahmed Khan. The entire fiasco of allegations and counter allegations was sliced and diced in media and the APSC merit list topper’s name surrounded with controversies.
Yesterday, Hailakandi’s Maria Tanim broke her silence in a press-conference. She rubbished Khan brothers’ allegations and said, “There is no question of anyone taking me away by force or grounding me. I left my matrimonial home by choice and as a mature adult, I have all the rights to do so. Also, we must understand in today’s time, it is impossible to force someone.”
While Tamin’s father Kutub Uddin Barbhuiya in his FIR accused the Khan family of “demanding dowry” and stated that to be the main reason behind Tamin separating from her husband, the APSC topper, however, refused to go into specifics. “I decided to leave my husband three years back due to various reasons,” she said. Maria Tanim also clarified that she finds it an abysmal act to fish for publicity using private life and therefore “this is the first and the last time” she is discussing this in public.
As per Aziz Khan’s (Mithu) FIR, Maria Tanim was ceremoniously married to him in 2012 and both have been living happily in their residence in Guwahati. He, in his FIR mentioned that, in 2017 Tanim’s mother took Tanim with her for a few days and since then they have stopped her from returning to her matrimonial home by force. Maria Tanim rubbished the allegations against her parents and said, “These are 100% lies.” “I left the Khan family three years back and since then have kept no touch with them,” she added.
Family sources said, Tamin’s family did not go for a legal separation back then as that would have come as an obstacle for Maria’s APSC preparations. After the examinations were over, Kutub Uddin Barbhuiya and his family have made several attempts to reach out to the Khan family for a formal and legal separation.
