Asian Games: Hima Das to run in Jakarta; watch her on Sony ESPN, DD Sports at 7:05 PM

Junior World Champion of 2018, and India’s track and field flagbearer Assam’s Hima Das will kick-start her Asian games campaign today. The Jakarta Asiad has seen a roller coaster journey for India so far. While 15-year-old Shardul Vihan shot his way to gold to create history, men’s badminton contingent and the kabaddi team faced disappointing early exits.

While hopes are high on PV Sindhu, Saina Nehwal, the archery team; today, all eyes will be on Assam’s 18-year-old athletic sensation Hima Das. She will hit the track at 7:05 PM for her 400-meter qualification race. You can watch the race on Sony ESPN and DD Sports. Das in her interviews mentioned that she is not eyeing a medal, instead, she wants to record her personal best. Her junior world championship victory took the athletics world by surprise. Now, the Jakarta Asiad can be the best platform for her to experience some senior level competition and prepare for the 2020 Olympics.

Her father, a former football player was her inspiration in sports. She was discovered as an athlete in a Yoga meet. After she won the junior championships, Sarbananda Sonowal, chief minister of Assam, announced her as the state’s first-ever sports ambassador. If she manages to win a gold for India, it would be a historical moment for Assam too.
India is currently in the ninth position in the medal’s tally, with 27 medals- 6 gold, 5 silver 16 bronze. India’s expectations are much higher and few good performances in the final phase of the Asiad can take the country to a better position in the tally.
