Assam CM Faces Backlash Over Controversial Remarks Towards Journalist

The Journalist Association for Assam (JAFA) has condemned recent remarks made by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, which have sparked controversy and offended the journalistic community. Recently, CM Sarma responded to a question from journalist Shah Alam during a press interaction which was not appreciated by many. The Chief Minister’s comments, which included invoking the journalist’s name and making references of a conspiracy against him, have been widely criticised.

During a press conference, Journalist Shah Alam questioned CM Sarma about a particular issue related to a mountain cutting incident. In response, the Chief Minister not only addressed Alam by name but also mentioned name of the Chancellor of USTM Mahbubul Hoque trying to imply both working together in a conspiracy against him. This approach was perceived as an attempt to stereotype and undermine the journalist, casting aspersions on his professional intentions.

In addition to this, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma further inflamed the situation by suggesting that journalists questioning him about the mountain issues were receiving endorsements from the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM). This came after Sarma had previously made a controversial statement directly blaming USTM for the Guwahati floods.

The Chief Minister implied that the journalists were implicitly defending USTM, thus associating their inquiries with a broader agenda to shield the university from scrutiny. This implication has only added to the controversy, leading to increased criticism from the journalistic community.

JAFA has expressed deep concern over the Chief Minister’s remarks. In a statement, JAFA’s president Abhidheep Choudhury, executive president Pankaj Deka, chief organisational secretary Kushal Saikia, and chief secretary Kunj Mohon Ray said that such behaviour towards a journalist is unacceptable. They highlighted that the role of journalists is to uncover and report factual information, and such remarks undermine the integrity of their work.

The statement further stressed that Shah Alam’s question was in pursuit of truth, which is the fundamental duty of journalism. JAFA has called for CM Sarma to refrain from making similar comments in the future. The association has urged the Chief Minister to maintain professionalism and respect towards journalists, ensuring that their role in society is not compromised by disparaging remarks.

JAFA’s call for restraint highlights the broader issue of press freedom and the need for a respectful dialogue between public officials and the media. The incident has drawn attention to the importance of protecting journalists from political and religious bias, ensuring that their work is conducted without fear or favour.
