Assam Government Takes Strong Measures to Combat Cyclone Remal, Prioritizes Road Restoration of Dima Hasao-Barak

In response to the ongoing Cyclone Remal, the Assam government has implemented extensive measures to safeguard the population from heavy rainfall and high winds. IAS Dr Ravi Kota, the Chief Secretary to the Government of Assam, conducted a comprehensive review of preparedness and response efforts across the affected districts.

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) is closely monitoring the situation in coordination with district authorities and various response agencies. A high-level meeting in Dispur, chaired by Dr Kota, included District Commissioners (DCs) and Superintendents of Police (SPs) via video conference, alongside DGP GP Singh and senior secretaries from the Emergency Response departments. Dr Kota instructed district administrations to suspend ferry services until noon on May 29, 2024 and directed NHAI and NHIDCL to prioritize the restoration of road communications in Dima Hasao District and Barak Valley.

Gyanendra Dev Tripathi, IAS, Principal Secretary of Revenue & Disaster Management, outlined the state’s preparedness and current situation. He identified Cachar, Karimganj, Hailakandi, Dima Hasao, West Karbi Anglong, Karbi Anglong, Nagaon, Hojai, and Golaghat as the districts on red alert for the storm. As per the press release issued by the ASDMA, measures being taken include school regulations, restricted fishing and agricultural activities, evacuation of vulnerable populations, prompt ex-gratia payments, medical treatment for the injured, maintaining communication channels, restoring electricity, and assessing damages.

The press note also mentioned that, to date, the Cyclone Remal has claimed three lives—one each in Morigaon, Kamrup, and Kamrup Metro districts—and injured 17 people in Morigaon and Sonitpur districts. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) expects an improvement in conditions within the next 24 hours, with a decrease in rainfall and wind speed.

Representatives from Railways, CWC, BSNL, NHAI, NHIDCL, NEEPCO, NESAC, and APDCL provided updates on the current situation and their plans for immediate repair and restoration of infrastructure.

District Administration in Cachar also released a press note notifying the emergency helpline number. The note read, “In light of Cyclone Remal, 24×7 control rooms in Silchar, Cachar are operational to ensure the safety of our citizens. Please stay safe and cooperate with your local authorities”
