Assam SPs barred from direct media communication, DGP directs them to appoint spokespersons

In a significant development, the Director General of Police (DGP) of Assam GP Singh announced today that Superintendents of Police (SPs) across the state are no longer permitted to directly communicate with media personnel. Instead, they have been directed to appoint spokespersons who will serve as the official point of contact for disseminating information and interacting with the press.

Addressing journalists at a press conference, DGP Singh shed light on the rationale behind this decision. He emphasised that when he joined his job, he was informed that his work should be felt rather than heard. Singh further advised the Indian Police Service (IPS) and Assam Police Service (APS) officers that the public should evaluate the quality of their work, rather than relying on self-promotion. He stressed the need for a structured mechanism to provide vital information to the media and the general public.

To facilitate effective communication and streamline information dissemination, Inspector General (IG) of Law and Order has been appointed as the official spokesperson of Assam Police Headquarters. Apart from scheduled press briefings and meetings, the DGP himself refrains from engaging with the media in general.

In an effort to uphold this new approach, the DGP issued a directive to all SPs across Assam, instructing them to appoint spokespersons who will be responsible for coordinating with the media. This move aims to ensure that relevant information reaches the public promptly and in a consistent manner.
