Assam University International Open FIDE Rated Chess Tournament 2025 Concludes

The 1st Assam University International Open FIDE Rated Chess Tournament 2025 concluded on Thursday with a grand prize distribution ceremony, marking a historic milestone in the region’s sporting calendar. Organised by the Aikagunya Foundation, an NGO working to promote inclusive sporting opportunities, the championship was hosted by Assam University in collaboration with the Cachar District Chess Organisation as co-organisers.

The week-long championship, which began on June 28, witnessed the participation of over 250 players, including contingents from across Indian states and neighbouring Nepal. Notably, several defence personnel also took part, showcasing the wide appeal of the tournament.

“This is the biggest chess tournament ever held in the Northeast in terms of prize money,” said Tournament Director Utpal Suklabaidya. With a total prize pool of Rs. 11 lakh, the event featured 232 prize categories and 72 trophies, spanning across three formats — Classic, Rapid, and Blitz.

While the organisers had aimed to make history by offering free entry to transgender players — a first-of-its-kind initiative — the plan could not materialise due to railway disruptions that hindered travel. “We were committed to inclusivity, and we hope to continue this initiative in future editions,” said an Aikagunya Foundation representative.

The tournament saw an incredible age range among its participants — from a 5-year-old girl from Delhi, who may go on record as the youngest female participant, to an 85-year-old advocate from Rajasthan, proving that chess truly transcends age.

“In a time when many youths are getting distracted in the wrong direction, involvement in sports like chess can serve as a guiding force,” said Suklabaidya, underlining the tournament’s larger purpose.

The championship wrapped up with a vibrant prize distribution ceremony at Assam University’s campus, celebrating the winners and reinforcing the power of chess as a tool for inclusion, discipline, and international unity.
