Assam University Launches ‘Krishi Bikash’ Mobile App for Farmers

In a move aimed at boosting technology-driven agriculture, Assam University has launched a new mobile application titled “Krishi Bikash – Barak Valley.” The app has been developed with financial support from the Department of Science and Technology in collaboration with the university.

The multilingual, voice-enabled application is designed to provide farmers and agricultural enthusiasts with easy access to expert guidance, crop-related information, and advanced weather forecasts. It offers features such as crop-specific modern farming techniques, soil health management, fertiliser usage, and best cultivation practices.

Additionally, the app provides advance weather alerts, pest and disease identification along with remedial measures, and region-specific agricultural information tailored for the Barak River Basin. Voice assistance in local languages and timely updates further enhance its accessibility for farmers.

Available on the Google Play Store, the app has been optimised to function smoothly even on low-cost smartphones and slower internet connections, ensuring wider reach among rural users.

Dr. Somnath Mukhopadhyay, Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Assam University and the project’s principal investigator, urged farmers from all sections to adopt the platform. He added that the application will be continuously improved based on user feedback and expressed hope that it will significantly benefit the agricultural community in the Barak Valley region.
