Assam University Students' Union's president Subhamoy Chanda stands impeached; VP takes over interim charge
Assam University Students’ Union’s unopposed elected President Subhamoy Chanda was impeached after a majority voted in favour of his impeachment. On August 8, 2022, the resolution to impeach the newly elected president was moved. But this was still on papers as the scrutiny was pending. There have been several allegations against Chanda and even though most of them were dismissed by the election commission of the varsity as there was no strong proof against those allegations.
This impeachment makes the elected Vice-President of the union the President in charge. Kisamlungbe Pame, the earlier Vice-President has signed the Notification of Impeachment today to inform about the same. Pame has accepted the position of President in charge.
The notification read, “On the basis of the Resolution of Impeachment passed by the Students’ Union on 08-08-2022, the President of the Students’ Union, 2022-23, Shri Shubhamoy Chanda, stands impeached henceforth Under Article 8(b), the Vice President shall start officiating as the President of the Students’ Union with immediate effect Under Rule 5 (M), until a new President is elected this notification will remain in force”.
After resolution to impeach was moved on August 8, in a conversation with a Barak Bulletin correspondent he said he has not been informed anything about his impeachment. It is worth mentioning here that Pallab Dey of the University was favourite to win the position of President. His nomination was scrutinised and accepted and thereafter, his name was published on the list of final candidates. However, all of a sudden he mysteriously decided to withdraw his nomination. Since then. he has been pressing several charges against Chanda and if sources are to be believed, he played a pivotal role in getting Chanda impeached.
Will Pallab Dey contest the election for the post of president if the same is called for to find the new president? If he does so, will he first go on and explain his cause of withdrawal at the first stage? It remains to be seen!
