Attack On APDCL Staff During Disconnection Drive in Karimganj, FIR Against Perpetrator
In a shocking incident that unfolded on December 27, 2023, at approximately 02:40 pm, three employees of the Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) were violently attacked during a disconnection drive in Khudpurahuria village, Manikganj, Karimganj.
According to the filed FIR, Alfaz Goni, Uttam Acharjee, and Sahidul Haque, all part of the DWC staff, were assaulted by Raju Ahmed, son of Runu Begum, a resident of Khudpurahuria and identified as APDCL Consumer.
The assailant allegedly refused to settle his outstanding energy bill despite repeated requests from the APDCL staff. The situation took a violent turn when Raju Ahmed, armed with a metal sickle, charged at Alfaz Goni with the intent to cause harm. Goni was forcibly pushed into a pond, along with his motorcycle and belongings, and subjected to a severe blow to the head using the sickle, resulting in grievous injuries and profuse bleeding.
The FIR further states that the accused obstructed the APDCL staff from performing their duties by resorting to physical force, a violation falling under sections 353, 333, 332, and 307 of the Indian Penal Code.
This incident highlights the challenges faced by utility service providers in ensuring the safety of their staff while discharging essential duties. Authorities are expected to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter to ensure justice for the victims and to prevent future occurrences.
It is worth mentioning here that a few days back, Sub Divisional Engineer too was attacked and FIR regarding the same was lodged at the Police Station. What actions the Police take to ensure safety to the APDCL employees is something that remains to be seen.
