Attack on Kashmiri labourers in Silchar during curfew; "Situation under control; viral video not true" SP Cachar.

Last night, a video went viral on social media which claimed that the Kashmiri labourers in Srikona area were attacked by a local mob. The video claims that Cachar Police did not take any action regarding the attack. However, SP Cachar, Manebendra Dev Ray ruled out all the allegations and said that the person who made the video has been detained.

As per available information, last night at around 9:00 PM a quarrel broke between the labourers in Srikona’s Alambag area and the local villagers. The SP Cachar informed that a local resident who was drunk was passing by the labourers and got into an argument. “Following that, the locals got dragged into it and a hue and cry was created which resulted in a law and order situation. But the allegations made in the video against Assam Police and Cachar Police is not true. Additional SP and other senior officials immediately rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control,” informed SP, Ray.

There are 34 labourers stationed at a camp in Srikona’s Alambag area and they are working under NER-II transmission. Out of 34 labourers, 16 are from Kashmir. “They are skilled labourers and are working at a tower infrastructure site. Most of them do not want to return back to Kashmir as they have all their work in this part of the country. We have relocated them to Inter-State Bus Terminus in Ramnagar and their safety is taken care of,” added Ray.

A labourer from Kashmir, Abdul Hamid Gori, 45 years claimed that he was brutally assaulted by the locals. Police sources informed us, that he along with a local villager Jiten Das, 28 years were sent to the hospital for a medical check-up but there were no signs of any sort of injury on either of them. They were immediately released by the medical officer.

SP Cachar believes the video was made and circulated intentionally to defame the state government and the local administration. “There was no mob attack. It was just a hue and cry and a quarrel. The moment Police got the information they acted. All the claims made in the video are fictitious and we will take strict actions against the perpetrator,” says SP.

Meanwhile, the labourers and the contractor Wani Construction has released another video claiming that the video made earlier was rusty and impulsive and does not speak the truth. The person who made the video features in the new video, and seeks an apology for using derogatory words against Assam Government and local Police.

“We are investigating the matter to find if this is actually rusty and impulsive or there were some hidden intentions behind uploading such a defamatory video,” concludes SP.
