Barak Valley Khilonjia Mancha accuses Dilip Kumar of betrayal; lodges complaint in Silchar Sadar

The withdrawal of Dilip Kumar’s candidatures from the upcoming Lok Sabha elections have spurred up a new controversy. The Assam Indigenous People Protection Committee’s Barak Valley unit had supported Dilip Kumar, proprietor of daily newspaper Prerna Bharati to contest in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Kumar had submitted his nomination too but on the deadline day (March 29,2019) decided to withdraw his candidature.

Today the members the Khilonjia Mancha filled a complaint against Kumar in Silchar Sadar thana. The members of the committee accused Dilip Kumar of betrayal and said, “He cheated us and played with the emotions of the indigenous people of Barak Valley. On March 28, 2019 he called us and said he is withdrawing his candidature, we asked him to wait and not do any such thing without consulting the members of the committee. Despite that, he went on and cancelled his candidature.”

The member of the committee speaking to our correspondent said that they believe Dilip Kumar met NEDA chief Himanta Biswa Sarma and reached a mutual agreement. “What we got to know is that Biswa Sarma offered something to Dilip Kumar, which he agreed to and thus withdrew his candidature. There are photographic evidence which proves Dilip Kumar met Biswa Sarma on March 28,” the member added.

Dilip Kumar was supposed to contest as an independent candidate from Silchar constituency. Political analysts estimated him to cause a dent at BJPs vote by diverting the non-bengali votes which traditionally remained a strong base of BJP. After withdrawing his candidature he himself said that he took the decision after having a successful meeting with Himanta Biswa Sarma.

It remains to be seen if this complaint from the members of Barak Valley Khilonjia Mancha manage to bring a new twist in the election campaigning.
