Barak Valley Landlocked: Trains canceled, vehicular traffic disrupted due to landslides and overflowing rivers
Incessant downpour in Southern Assam has disrupted road and railway communication between Barak Valley and the rest of the state and country.
Tripura, Southern Assam and parts of Manipur and Mizoram is experiencing heavy rainfall since few days due to a cyclonic low pressure that is formed over Bay of Bengal. Landslides have been reported from different parts of the National Highway 6 between Badarpur and Shillong in Jaintia Hills. Barak and Jatinga river also soaring and flowing over the danger level, creating floods at many places.
As per the Northeast Frontier Railway sources, Rail movements in Lumding-Badarpur section has been suspended following multiple incidents of landslips and overflow of water in the hill section.
The Vistadome Express, Silchar Guwahati Express, Kanchanjungah express, Humsafar Express has been temporarily halted. “All connectivities are closed due to heavy rainfall, landslide and overflowing of railway track, we are working to make things normal,” Sabyasachi De, the Chief Public Relation Officer of NF Railway informed Barak Bulletin.
Road connectivity with Assam, Tripura, Mizoram and Manipur has been affected severely because of landslide at different places in NH 6 near Malidhor, Ratacherra, Umkiang.
“There are multiple cases of landslides, all the vehicles, including passenger vehicles are stranded in the road, we are working to make things normal with urgency, all government, private resources have been placed to deal with the situation. So far no information of accidents, injuries or loss of lives have been reported,” Abhilas Baranwal, Deputy Commissioner of East Jaintia Hills informed Barak Bulletin.
On the other hand, inland water transportation division has suspended all the boating services accross Barak River until further order, there was an instance of Boat sinking in Sonabarighat Ghat.
