Bengal Slow Loris rescued from Shantipur village of Dholai Puthikhal GP in Cachar district

Since several days, the rescue of endangered wild animals has been going on from Dholai Police Station area adjacent to Assam-Mizoram border. Just a few days ago, Cachar police rescued two langurs and seven foreign spider monkeys in cages from Dholai’s Jeevangram GP in Devipur and handed them over to the forest department. After this, an injured monkey was rescued from Rukni Tea Garden area.

This time, a cub of endangered Bengal Slow Loris locally known as “Lojjaboti Banor” was recovered from a house next to Shantipur LP School in Shantipur village of Puthikhal GP under Dholai Police Station area. The locals reported the incident to Hawaithang Forest Range Office in Dholai. A forest guard named Rohit Das rescued the monkey and released it in the Borail Sanctuary after necessary veterinary treatment.

It maybe mentioned it is very difficult to find such endangered animals in Dholai region as well as in different parts of Assam. Hence rescuing so many endangered animals from Dholai has raised a question mark on what’s happening in the region. Many locals believe that in order to escape from the hands of the police, animal traffickers are leaving the endangered animals in secluded places.
