Berenga Nath Para Embankment at Risk: ‘Silchar Could Face a 2022-Like Catastrophe’ says TMC protestor
The people of Berenga Nath Para are facing difficulties as the embankment connecting their area to Silchar has sunk due to riverbank erosion. Despite their grievances, no steps have been taken to repair the embankment, raising concerns about safety.
Cachar District Trinamool Congress on March 11 has voiced its support for the residents, staging a protest and demanding urgent repair work. Party members raised slogans, criticising the delay and urging the authorities to take immediate action.
A party representative stated, “The condition of the embankment in Berenga Nath Para is critical. Not long ago, after an inspection we met with the departmental engineer, he assured us that the repair work would begin in February. However, the dry season is ending, and no progress has been made. When we questioned this, the engineer again assured us that the work would start soon.”
The representative further expressed concern over the authorities’ inaction. “For the past 6-7 months, there has been no rain, providing a golden opportunity for repairs. Yet, no work has started. If this embankment collapses, Silchar could face a disaster worse than the 2022 floods. During the recent Assam Budget, the government has announced crores of rupees for development in Barak Valley, but nothing has been sanctioned for this embankment. We urge the government to act immediately and prevent a potential crisis.”
The embankment is a vital link for the locals, connecting them to Silchar. Residents fear that if repairs are delayed, the embankment may collapse during the monsoon, causing a disaster worse than the 2022 floods. A breach could flood Silchar within hours, endangering lives and property. They urge immediate action to prevent such a crisis.
