BJP backs former Students’ Union president Milon Das to breach AIUDF fortress in Hailakandi”

In 2016 Assembly election, AIUDF candidate Anwar Hussain Laskar narrowly defeated (2608 votes) BJP’s Soumyajit Dutta Choudhury. 1991 was the last and only time when BJP won Hailakandi Legislative Assembly Constituency.

BJP’s Chittendra Nath Mazumder had toppled Janata Dal candidate to flag-off lotus in what is recognised as the fortress of Indian National Congress and AIUDF.

It was so near yet so far for Dutta Choudhury in 2016. For 2021, the party has decided to punt on young and dynamic Milon Das. Research Scholar and for president of Assam University’s Students’ Union has got the ticket to contest from Hailakandi.

“I feel blessed that a large national political party like the BJP has trusted me with a ticket to contest in the election. My initial goal is to ensure that we are able to communicate BJP’s manifesto to each and every voter in the constituency,” said Das while speaking with Barak Bulletin.

Hailakandi remains a fortress of AIUDF as the minority votes get consolidated. Das is of the opinion that BJP too gets a lot of minority votes. “Things have changed a lot. At one time, Hindu minorities in Hailakandi lived in immense fear. Today, that is not the case. The Hindus have a presence BJP has many committees at the grassroots level,” asserted Das.

Party’s general secretary Arun Singh made the announcement while declaring the list of candidates for the remaining phases.

It remains to be seen if Milon Das successfully breaches the fortress. May 2, we will all get to know.
