Bodies of 12 Suspected Kuki Insurgents Killed in Jiribam CRPF Encounter Brought to SMCH For Postmortem

At least twelve suspected Kuki insurgents were killed in a fierce encounter with security forces in Manipur’s Jiribam district on Sunday. The incident occurred when militants allegedly attacked the Borobekra Police Station and a nearby CRPF post in Jakuradhor around 3 P.M., yesterday. A CRPF constable, Sanjeev Kumar, was injured in the assault and was evacuated to Silchar Medical College in Assam for treatment of gunshot injuries.

According to sources, the insurgents launched a massive, coordinated attack from two sides, targeting the police station and a relief camp for internally displaced people nearby. The attackers, believed to have arrived in autorickshaws, later advanced to the settlement of Jakurador Karong, roughly one kilometre from the police station, where they set houses ablaze while engaging in a gunfight with security forces.

Following 40 to 45 minutes of intense gunfire, security personnel brought the situation under control, recovering the bodies of 12 insurgents along with a cache of weapons, including AK series rifles, RPGs, SLRs, and INSAS rifles. While this can pose a threat to the security of the areas of Cachar bordering Manipur, including Jirighat and Lakhipur, law enforcement is on alert. Speaking with Barak Bulletin, the District Commissioner of Cachar, Mridul Yadav said, “I am in touch with the Deputy Commissioner of Jiribam, the CDC of Lakhipur has been instructed to keep a close eye on the chain of events. The recent incidents have happened around 30 kilometres away from the border and therefore, we don’t foresee any immediate influx in migration triggered by the recent events. However, as a district, we are on alert.”

The bodies of 12 Kuki insurgents killed by CRPF gunfire in Manipur’s Jiribam have been brought to Silchar Medical College. The bodies were brought amidst tight security to Silchar Medical College for postmortem examination. The Superintendent of Police from Jiribam has transported the bodies from Jiribam to Silchar Medical College, where postmortem procedures are currently ongoing. After completion of the postmortem, the bodies will be taken back to Jiribam.

The Principal of Silchar Medical College and Hospital, Dr. Bhaskar Gupta has informed that the hospital has received a total of 12 dead bodies that were escorted by Manipur Police. These bodies have been brought to SMCH for postmortem and the same has been endorsed by Cachar District Administration. Following the paperwork, the postmortem process has started and might need time till tomorrow to complete.

It is noteworthy that yesterday, in Jakuradhor in Jiribam district, 12 Kuki insurgents were killed in CRPF firing. The incident has again created a tense situation in Jiribam. In light of the recent developments, a curfew was imposed in the Jiribam district in Manipur, since last night and tight security forces have been ensured to maintain order.
