Borkhola: 5-year-old crushed under betel nut tree
A 5-year-old girl tragically lost her life in a horrific accident in Ranghar Part 1, Borkhola, on Wednesday, January 22, after a betel nut tree fell on her. The incident occurred at the residence of Nenu Mia.
According to eyewitness accounts, Nenu Mia’s son-in-law was cutting the tree when it toppled unexpectedly, striking the child. She was immediately rushed to Sonapur Health Centre and later referred to Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) in a critical condition. However, she succumbed to her injuries shortly after reaching SMCH.
The girl’s mother, who has been raising her three children alone after the death of her husband Jalal Uddin, is devastated by the loss. The incident has plunged the family into despair, with their financial and emotional burdens worsening.
Following the tragedy, tensions arose between the victim’s family and the household responsible for cutting the tree. Locals reported that Nenu Mia’s family refused to accept responsibility or provide any compensation, suggesting instead that the victim’s family approach the individuals who cut the tree. The individual who cut the tree happens to be Nenu Mia’s son-in-law and other related individuals. This refusal has sparked outrage in the community.
As the body is expected to be brought back home after a post-mortem on Thursday, local residents have rallied around the grieving family, offering support and urging government authorities to provide immediate relief.
