Borkhola Tragedy: Husband Arrested Over Car Plunge That Killed Wife and Daughter

Cachar Police has arrested Rais Uddin Barbhuiya in the Raipur, Borkhola accident case based on an FIR. The FIR was lodged by the family of Rais’s deceased wife Helena Begum’s family. Accusing him of foul play in the matter and a planned accident, they demanded his arrest. Accordingly, Cachar Police arrested him on Saturday morning.

The unfortunate accident happened on December 17, in Borkhola’s Raipur area, when Rais’s car plunged into the Barak River late at night, while he was returning from Silcahr along with his wife and 1-year-old daughter. While the car fell into the water, off the road, he escaped the vehicle but his wife and daughter remained stuck inside the vehicle. Cacahar Police along with SDRF scoured the water to trace the vehicle but failed, only to be found by an untrained diver.

By the time, the car was located on the morning of December 18, Wednesday, Helena Begum Barbhuiya, and her one-year-old daughter, Jannatara Begum, had died due to drowning. Rais Uddin who escaped the vehicle immediately after the drowning was sent by Cachar Police to Silchar Medical College and Hospital for the necessary treatment. But there was suspicion in the entire accident and Cachar Police was cautious to investigate the matter in its entirety to rule out any foul play.

SP Numal Mahtta too showed signs of suspicion in the matter which was to be ruled out after a thorough investigation. When GP Singh, the DGP of Assam had asked SP Cacahr asking him to through the investigation, the suspicion became even more serious.

Locals at the scene of the accident had also questioned why Rais had taken this road, which happens to be very narrow and full of gravel and boulders on the road.

Deceased Helena Begum’s family filed an FIR with Cachar Police blaming Rais Uddin for the planned accident and alleged the murder of their daughter and her infant.

SP Numal Mahatta confirmed Barak Bulletin of the arrest of Rais Uddin this morning based on the FIR. Currently, Rais Uddin Barbhuiya remains in the custody of Cachar Police and is being interrogated.
