Brawl in SMCH; Research Scientist breaks jaw of lab technician, FIR lodged; "Matter under investigation," OC

In a bizarre turn of affairs, a Research Scientist has allegedly punched a laboratory technician fracturing his jaw and uprooting a tooth. Both employees of Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) engaged in an altercation on September 2, 2021.

According to the Police complaint, Fuzail Islam Mazarbhuiya, aged about 24 years, who works as a Laboratory Technician (Regularised position under National Health Mission) at SMCH, Silchar and due to COVID-19 Pandemic temporarily posted at the Dept. of Microbiology, SMCH, Silchar was invited by Supratik Roy, Research Scientist, P.M. CARES Lab, SMCH, for a discussion.

The complaint to the Principal and the FIR lodged by Mazarbhuiya’s father, states, “On September 2, during duty hours, while my son Fuzail Islam was in the Department at around 2:15 p.m. to 2:45 p.m., one Supratik Roy, Research Scientist, P.M. CARES Lab, SMCH, Silchar called him to RNA Extraction Room, VRDL, Dept. of Microbiology. As soon as my son Fuzail Islam entered into the RNA Extraction Room, Supratik Roy started charging and abusing my son with filthy language, inter alia alleging that my son Fuzail Islam spreading rumour in respect of Supratik Roy and engaged into an altercation with my son.”

While it is astonishing that two well-educated medical practitioners resorted to hurling abuses, what follows next is bizarre. The complaint adds, “Before my son could realise, as to what had happened, all of a sudden, the Supratik Roy started assaulting my son with fist blow and punches. To which my son started to bleed from his mouth.”

According to the complainant, Dr. Subendhu Sekhar Sen, Associate Professor, Dept. of Microbiology intervened and summoned his son to the chamber of the respected doctor. “He told that he will resolve the issue within the Department, being an internal matter and further asked my son to put his signature on a piece of paper, to which my son put his signature. Thereafter, as my son was constantly bleeding, Dr. Subendhu Sekhar Sen told him to leave Department.”

However, Fuzail Islam Mazarbhuiya could bear the pain and was rushed to the SMCH for treatment. CT Scan revealed that he has fractured his lower jaw and a tooth got uprooted due to the alleged punch. Fakrul Islam Mazarbhuiya, father of the victim, furnished CT Scan reports to the Police and urged to take action as per law.

Speaking with Barak Bulletin, OC of Gunghoor Police Outpost P Chandan Bora said, “Yes, we have received an FIR today. The complainant alleged that one employee of the SMCH assaulted his son who also happens to be an employee of the same institution. The investigating officer has visited the spot and is investigating the matter.”

The Police is yet to arrest or detain anyone with regards to this case. Meanwhile, Fuzail Islam Mazarbhuiya has been admitted to ENT General Ward (Male) as he is undergoing treatment.
