Breaking News: Assam Government declares public holiday on 16 April

The General Administration Department of Government of Assam in a letter issued today has declared April 16 as a public holiday on account of Bohag Bihu.

The letter dated April 13 states, “The Governor of Assam is pleased to declare 16th April as Public Holiday under Section 25 of N.I. Act, 1881 (XXIV of 1881) read with the Government of India, Ministry of Home Affairs Notification No 20/25/Pub- I dated 8th June 1957 on account of Bohag Bihu.”

“All the financial institutions/Cooperative banks etc. within the state of Assam will remain closed on account of this Public Holiday under N.I Act,” the letter, signed by Additional Secretary to the Government of Assam further added.

With Monday being a public holiday, banks would also be shut. It is advisable for everyone to wrap up their banking work today with tomorrow (2nd Saturday) being bank holiday.

It might be recalled that a letter issued by IAS Ahmed Hussain, Commissioner and Secretary to the government of Assam, General Administration Department, had cancelled the Good Friday holiday issuing a notice a day prior prior. The notice issued on March 29, had stated, “In cancellation of the Holiday on account of Good Friday on March 30, 2018 issued vide notification No. GAG(A) 81/2016309 dated 18/12/2017, in the interest of public service and in view of clearance of large number of pending bills and cheques and all Treasuries of the state, the Governor of Assam is pleased to declare that all banks will remain open on March 30, 2018.”

The festival of Bohag Bihu or Rongali Bihu also called Xaat Bihu is celebrated in Assam to mark the beginning of the harvesting season.
