Breaking: Restoration of Silchar-Guwahati vehicular traffic via Shillong Road will take around 24 hours

In a significant developmeant, the Meghalaya administration has announced that it may take approximately 24 hours to clear debris and restore vehicular traffic on the Silchar-Guwahati road via NH06 or Shillong Road. The disruption was caused by a mudslide near the Sonapur tunnel, leading to a complete halt in vehicular movement.

At 9:00 am, authorities provided an update on the situation, highlighting the mudslide’s impact on the flow of traffic. Despite the heavy rainfall in the area, excavation work commenced to clear the debris. Excavators were deployed to tackle the challenging task at hand.

By 2:00 pm, the East Jaintia Hills administration shared further information, stating that the massive flow of debris and mud from the adjacent hills near the Sonapur Tunnel necessitates approximately 24 hours for clearing and restoring vehicular movement. In light of this, officials urged the public to avoid traveling along this route and seek alternative routes wherever possible.

Recognizing the severity of the situation, the Deputy Commissioner of East Jaintia Hills has written to the Project Director, PIU Shillong, National Highway Authority of India, to appraise them of the disastrous condition. “You are aware the problem at the Sonapyrdi Tunnel on the National Highway 6 will likely persist throughout the monsoon due to the continuous mudslide from the adjoining hills. As there is no alternate route to divert vehicles and as the NH 6 serves as a lifeline to the adjoining states of Assam, Mizoram and Tripura, it is untenable that the mudslide from adjoining hills should be allowed to flow unabated on the National Highway without any intervention,” states the letter.

Addressing the urgent need for action, the Deputy Commissioner urged immediate exploration of methods to control or divert the mudflow from the surrounding hills. The DC adds, “In light of the above, you are to immediately explore ways and means on how to control or divert the mudflow from the adjoining hills so that the normal flow of vehicular movement is least hampered. You are also to inform the undersigned of the timeline within which the said intervention can be implemented.”

The Silchar-Guwahati road via NH06 or Shillong Road is a vital transportation route, connecting multiple states and facilitating the movement of goods and people. The ongoing disruption caused by the mudslide near the Sonapur tunnel has caused inconvenience and posed significant challenges for commuters and businesses relying on this artery.

As the administration works diligently to clear the debris and restore normalcy, it is crucial for the public to cooperate by avoiding travel on the affected route and seeking alternate routes until the situation is resolved. Authorities are continuously monitoring the situation and will provide updates as progress is made in the restoration efforts.

It is advisable for commuters to stay informed through official channels and local news sources for the latest developments regarding the Silchar-Guwahati road’s reopening. The administration is committed to resolving the issue as swiftly as possible to minimize further inconvenience to the public.
