Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal during Namami Barak announced that two new bridges will be constructed over river Barak in Barak Valley. Since then several committees have been demanding a bridge in several side of the town. Today Madhuraghat Barak Bridge Demand Committee members held a meeting and announced that, “the new RCC bridge should be built alongside Madhuraghat in Malugram the proposal should be inducted in this year’s state budget.” The committee members mentioned that people of Dudhpatil and Malugram have been demanding for a bridge since 1989 and now if needed they are even ready to sacrifice their life.

The committee members addressed press in Silchar and expressed their point of view. President of the committee Kishor Kumar Bhattacharjee, general secretary Tanmay Purkayastha and other senior members were present in the meeting. The committee feels the member of Legislative Assembly, Borkhola Kishor Nath is against the proposal and he has vested interest in opposing it.

“From the very beginning Nath wanted the bridge to be built alongside Annapunna Ghat. In 1999 the Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had agreed to the proposal of building a bridge alongside Madhuraghat but few local political leaders did not let the proposal see any daylight. Now Nath is doing the same,” said the committee members.

“If by March 31 a bridge alongside Madhuraghat is not sanctioned then from first April residents of Borkhola and Malugram will call for a huge demonstration,” the committee concluded
