Cachar Administration gears to provide food and shelter to violence-affected families of Manipur; CM assures support
The situation in Manipur has deteriorated to the point that the state government has authorised District Magistrates to issue “shoot at sight” orders in extreme cases. The move came after violent clashes broke out during a protest march against the demand for the inclusion of the Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribe category.
As the violence worsens, affected families have begun migrating across the interstate border to seek safe refuge in Assam’s Lakhipur area. Over 600 people have already arrived in the Lakhinagar GP under the jurisdiction of the Cachar District Administration.
The Chief Minister of Assam, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, has pledged his support for the affected families, saying, “Several families affected by the recent incidents in Manipur have sought refuge in Assam. I have requested the District Administration of Cachar to take care of these families. I am also in constant communication with the HCM @NBirenSingh and have pledged the full support of the Assam Government during this hour of crisis.”
Deputy Commissioner of Cachar, Rohan Kumar Jha, has also called on the administration to provide support to the affected families. “Some of them have taken shelter at their respective relatives’ houses in Lakhinagar. For those who do not have relatives to go to, we have arranged community halls and school premises to accommodate them. Food will be arranged as we do when tackling a disaster management like flood. For now, we are prepared to take good care of these families seeking safe refuge in Cachar.”
The situation in Manipur remains tense, with violence continuing to escalate. However, the actions of the Cachar District Administration and the support of the Assam Government offer hope to the affected families seeking safety and shelter.
