Cachar COVID Update: 63 teachers among 277 to test positive today; 4 died in last 24 hours

Cachar district administration informed that 277 individuals have tested positive for coronavirus so far and there are 3000 results still awaited. “The administration performed more than 5000 tests using rapid test kit and 265 among them have tested positive. We are expecting the number to rise further as more than 3000 results are awaited,” said the spokesperson of the District Health Department.

He added that today, tests were conducted in Schools across the district and as many as 63 teachers have tested positive for COVID19. “We have noticed that many individuals are hiding their symptoms and not getting tested unless it is an emergency. We have heard from Medical College too that several patients are being admitted in critical condition. This is a counterproductive approach and we request residents to volunteer in testing and isolate themselves as soon as possible,” said Suman Choudhury, media expert, district health department.

He also said that there is a spike in Pneumonia cases in Silchar. “The patients reach the hospital at a stage when they stop responding to treatment. If tests are conducted when the patient is asymptomatic, the chance of recovery is far higher,” said Choudhury.

Dr. Bhaskar Gupta, vice-principal of Silchar Medical College and Hospital informed that in the last 24 hours, four male patients admitted to the hospital with COVID19 infection have succumbed. “Two of them were in ICU and the other two in COVID ward,” informed Gupta.

He added that six other patients admitted to the SMCH COVID ward are in critical condition. There are 152 patients admitted in the COVID ward and 12 are in ICU, while one under a ventilator.
