Cachar DDMA issues warning of extreme heavy rainfall in South Assam, puja committees in hysteria
The District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) of Cachar along with the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for heavy rainfall in the district. The rainfall is predicted in the period during Diwali, from October 24 to 26. The department has also alerted everyone to be prepared to face the worst. This rainfall that has been predicted by the IMD’s regional office is already dampening the spirits of Diwali. Clouds looming in the sky have made everyone gloomy.
In a notice marked “most urgent” the ADC cum CEO of DDMA said, “as per Bulletin issued by Indian Meteorological Department, Ministry of Earth Sciences… it has been stated that “heavy to very heavy rainfall” is likely to occur over South Assam on 24th & 25th October 2022”.
Alerting different authorities concerned including the Fire and Emergency Services Department, the notice further said, “I would like to request you to instruct all functionaries to remain alert and pro-active steps will have to be taken if the situation worsens. All are further to remain in coordination with DDMA-DEOC Control Room until the predicted warning calms down”.
The serious warning first from the IMD and now the notice from DDMA will keep the puja committees of Barak Valley awake at night. This “extreme heavy rainfall” is likely to impact Cachar, Karimganj, and hailakandi, along with Dima Hasao. The sky looks covered with clouds it sprinkled today afternoon.
