Cachar district administration shuts fair price shop in Silchar for violating norms

The district administration continues its drive to check artificial inflation in prices of essential commodities. Many shops have been shut by the supply inspectors after finding irregularities during surprise visit.

Yesterday, during one such inspection, a fair price shop was caught violating norms. FPS dealer of Kathal Road, Silchar town, ward no 17 did not maintain stock and price board. Due to which the shop was shut and an enquiry is being done.

“During this pandemic, administration wants to ensure people gets required groceries from government fair price shops at correct price. Not only fair price shops but also vegetables, fish etc. Teams have been formed to check prices. While such checking some fair price shops owners are found violating PDS norms. Hence their shops have been close down,” informed DDC in-charge, Jessica Rose Lalsim.

PDS is Public Distribution System and Food Corporation of India, a Government-owned corporation, procures and maintains the public distribution system (PDS). According to information available on Wikipedia, today, India has the largest stock of grain in the world besides China, the government spends Rs. 75,000 crore. Distribution of food grains to poor people throughout the country is managed by state governments. As of 2011 there were 505,879 fair price shops (FPS) across India.
