Cachar: Engineer Groom Calls Off Wedding after priest says "Lagna Over"; Bride's family seeks compensation
A seemingly joyous occasion turned into a tumultuous affair as a grand wedding in Cachar District’s Pailapool area took an unexpected turn, leaving both families in distress and prompting police intervention.
The backdrop to this dramatic event was the union of the Sen Gupta family from Dum Dum, Kolkata, and the Dey family in Cachar’s Pailapool. The marital bond was formed through a digital platform, leading to an affectionate relationship between their engineer son and daughter, both, engineers and currently staying in the United Kingdom. However, the much-anticipated celebration took an unforeseen twist as disagreement arose during the auspicious wedding hours.(Name of the Groom and Bride kept withheld respecting their privacy)
The Maa Bibaha Bhawan in Pailapool was adorned for the union, with the auspicious ‘lagna’ initially scheduled for 6:30 pm. However, due to the bride’s family’s insistence on hosting more invitees, a later time was sought. The priests representing both sides identified 11:30 pm as the propitious hour for the nuptials.
As the momentous hour approached and the couple prepared to exchange vows in the beautifully decorated Kunja, a dispute erupted between the priests. Allegedly, the priest from the groom’s contingent, hailing from Kolkata, declared that the auspicious time had passed, abruptly halting the ceremony. In an unexpected turn, the groom consented to call off the wedding, plunging the bride’s family into dismay.
The escalation of tensions led to a heated altercation between the two families, attracting the attention of local law enforcement. Police officials attempted to mediate, urging the groom to reconsider the decision, emphasising the significance of the occasion over the debate on ‘lagna’. However, their efforts proved futile, culminating in groom’s family being escorted to the Police station. Subsequently, they were released.
Speaking to Barak Bulletin, Cachar SP Numal Mahatta confirmed the incident, acknowledging the filing of an FIR by the bride’s family. He indicated that the matter might need legal intervention for resolution, with the bride’s family seeking compensation for the canceled wedding.
The peculiar sequence of events has left attendees perplexed, considering the long-standing relationship between the couple and the perception of a love marriage. The collapse of the union over a debate on ‘lagna’ in such circumstances remains enigmatic, prompting questions about the unforeseen twists in this love saga.
