Cachar: Father, Daughter, and Auto Driver Fall Victim to Dacoits, Phones and Cash Robbed on Katigorah Road
In a distressing incident, a father and daughter, along with their auto-rickshaw driver, were robbed of an iPhone, three mobile phones, and cash while returning home late at night. The incident took place on Thursday night on TRK Road near the Gobindpur GP Office.
On June 20, Khalil Uddin Laskar, a resident of Balighat, and his daughter were on their way home from Badarpur Railway Station. Khalil had gone to Badarpur Station to pick up his daughter, who worked in Bangalore and had returned. Around 1:30 AM, as they were travelling in an auto-rickshaw, their vehicle was blocked by a group of 5-6 armed miscreants using a fishing net. The dacoits threatened them with sharp weapons and took their belongings.
The dacoits fled the scene when they saw another vehicle approaching from behind. Khalil Uddin Laskar immediately reported the incident to the Arunachal police station on Thursday night, later the case was transferred to Katigorah Police the following morning. Following the complaint, a police team led by ASI Ayub Ali Barbhuiya visited the spot and initiated a preliminary investigation. The police are confident that the culprits will be apprehended soon.
Speaking to the media, Khalil Uddin Laskar said, “When we reached Gobindapur, we saw that the road was blocked using fishing nets tied to an electric pole and a tree on either side of the road. I asked the auto driver to slow down and stop the vehicle. As we stopped, armed men from all sides gheraoed our auto and put a dao (machete) on my shoulder. One of them asked us to hand over all our belongings or face dire consequences. They took all three mobile phones, including one iPhone of my daughter. They even searched the trolley bag to find some valuables. Out of nowhere came one Alto car with high speed and seeing the beam of that car, they probably suspected something and fled the scene”.
This incident highlights the increasing insecurity on Katigorah’s roads at night. After a brief period of calm, dacoities have resumed with dacoits blocking roads and looting vehicles. National highways, including the Silchar-Kalain Road and TRK Road, have been frequent targets.
Sources indicate that the floods in the area have exacerbated the problem, leading to a rise in such crimes. Many incidents remain unreported. Despite regular police patrols aimed at preventing these crimes, the recurrence of such incidents is alarming the local community.
