Cachar Flags Off 20-Tonne Organic Pineapple Consignment to Delhi, Eyes Global Market Expansion
Cachar district undoubtedly produces some of the finest pineapples, particularly those grown in the Hmarkhawlien and Lakhipur areas. In a major push for organic farming and farmer empowerment, the Cachar District Agriculture Office on Thursday (July 3) flagged off a 20-tonne consignment of organic pineapples from Lakhipur to New Delhi. The ceremonial dispatch was led by District Agriculture Officer Dr. A.R. Ahamed and marks a significant milestone in the region’s organic horticulture journey.
The pineapples, cultivated and packaged by Hmar Agro Organic Producer Company Ltd., are grown across nearly 1,500 hectares in Rajabazar, Binnakandi, and Lakhipur blocks. Around 2,000 farmers are engaged in the cultivation, producing approximately 40,000 metric tonnes of organic pineapples annually. This particular shipment to the national capital was facilitated with the support of Trifac Agro Pvt. Ltd.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Ahamed said, “Our farmers are now regularly supplying to states like Mizoram, Nagaland, and other parts of India. Last year, we even exported a consignment to Dubai. Another shipment to Dubai is planned via Guwahati as soon as road connectivity is restored.”
The event was attended by prominent figures, including Dr. N.C. Das, Sub-Divisional Agriculture Officer (Horticulture); Assam Gaurav awardee Manthan Hmar; Lalpiwng Hmar, Chairman of the Farmer Producer Company; and CEO Makhanlal Dosad. Their presence highlighted a united front to boost market access for Cachar’s organic produce.
This move is seen as a boost to the district’s efforts to position itself as a leader in sustainable agriculture while creating new opportunities for local farmers on both national and international platforms.
The information was shared through a press release issued by the Regional Office of Information & Public Relations, Barak Valley Zone, Silchar.
