Cachar Police apprehends Digbijoy Das from Agartala for abandoning his newborn in Silchar: "Paid sweeper to kill the baby"
On January 8, the streets of Silchar got shocked as a janitor at a hospital walked towards the dump yard with a newborn baby. The girl-child was abandoned by her parents a week after delivery. The parents Sampi Deb and Digbijoy Das are from Agartala and the baby was delivered at Nari Siksha Hospital in Silchar.
Locals found a man walking suspiciously with the newborn and that is when they stopped him near the Circuit House. While the general public thought he was stealing the baby, later they got to know that the baby was abandoned by her parents. The Hospital revealed that the baby is a special child. Barak Bulletin reported the incident and Assam State Commission for Protection for Child Rights, taking cognisance of the report, wrote to the deputy commissioner of Cachar and Superintendent of Police to take immediate action against the parents who abandoned the child.
“A team of Cachar Police visited Dharmanagar and apprehended the father. We will produce him before the judge at the court today and follow the legal course of action,” said Superintendent of Police, Cachar Dr. Ramandeep Kaur.
Police sources informed that Digbijoy Das, the father of the abandoned newborn confessed, “he paid the sweeper to kill the baby.” For some money, the sweeper agreed to do so and was heading towards a dump yard where he would throw the baby.
“Because the baby is a special child, the father said he resorted to doing whatever he did. This is our preliminary findings, the matter will be investigated further and the culprits will be booked as per law,” added SP Dr. Kaur.
