Cachar Police busts Assam-Manipur drug trafficking racket, apprehends peddler with Yaba worth Rs 7 crore
Cachar Police have once again intercepted a drug smuggling attempt along the Assam-Manipur border, arresting a trafficker with Yaba tablets worth ₹7 crore at Jirighat. The accused, Chungkang Leotang, a resident of Manipur’s Tamenglong district, was apprehended on Saturday (February 22) following a raid in Howkip Punji based on prior intelligence.
Superintendent of Police Numal Mahatta stated, “We had input from reliable sources regarding this drug shipment under the Jirighat Police Station in Howkip Punji, and we conducted a special operation. During the raid, we apprehended an individual from Manipur’s Tamenglong district and found a plastic bag containing 24,000 Yaba tablets.”
Preliminary investigations suggest a well-established drug network between Manipur and Assam. “Our investigation indicates that a joint drug circuit exists between these two states. The arrested individual crossed the Jiri River before reaching Jirighat, where we arrested him. We are also seeking cooperation from Manipur police to trace others linked to this racket,” Mahatta added.
The police have registered a case at Jirighat police station, and further investigations are underway. Authorities have vowed to intensify the crackdown on drug trafficking under the directives of the state’s chief minister.
