Cachar Police confiscates 7,000 kg of illegally smuggled Burmese Supari
Cachar Police has once again seized a huge consignment of Burmese Areca from Saidpur village in Cachar along with the alleged smuggler Nazim Uddin Barbhuiya. 127 bags of the illegally acquired areca were recovered which weighs nearly 7000 kilograms. The smuggler has been arrested and brought to Rangirkhari Police Town Out Post for further investigation.
Acting on a confidential tip, the Rangirkhari Out Post’s Inspector-in-Charge, Khanindra Nath and his team raided a residence in the village Saidpur Part 2 in the night of February 4, 2022. Speaking to our correspondent, the I/c said, “When we got the information last night that a person named Nazim Uddin Barbhuiya has hidden Burmese supari in his house, we went there for investigation and found the Intel to be true. Later we seized and brought the huge consignment to the Police Station”.
“The matter is under investigation and we are trying to find the links and how he is involved with the smuggling”, the inspector further added. The illegal consignment of 700 kilograms of Burmese Areca was filled in jute gunny bags and the market value of other links are yet under investigation.
Yesterday, the Cachar Police achieved a major success in it’s drive against illegal smuggling of Burmese areca through Cachar. The betel nuts enter India through Champai Border in Mizoram and then transported to the rest of the country via Silchar. The Police has arrested Haji Nizam Uddin, a kingpin involved in the nexus from Katigorah. The Assam Government has proposed the drafting of a Standard Operating Procedure for the export and transport of areca from Assam and Northeastern states.
