Cachar Police Encounters Dacoit with over 7 Cases in Hailakandi

An encounter in Hailakandi district resulted in the death of a suspected dacoit identified as Afzal Hussain Barbhuiya during a joint operation by Hailakandi Police and Cachar Police.

The incident occurred on Monday, May 27, when a team from Cachar Police came to Hailakandi pursuing Afzal Hussain Barbhuiya, wanted in connection with multiple cases of dacoity. Barbhuiya was reportedly spotted driving a vehicle in Hailakandi, prompting the joint operation by both police forces.

During a press conference held on the same day, after the encounter, Hailakandi SP Leena Doley stated that upon locating Barbhuiya, police instructed him to surrender. Instead, he allegedly seized a pistol from one of the officers present and attempted to fire, but the weapon malfunctioned initially. He allegedly tried to fire again and in response, the police fired in self-defense, resulting in Barbhuiya being injured. He was immediately rushed to the hospital for treatment but succumbed to his injuries shortly thereafter. Meanwhile, his accomplice was apprehended by the police.

SP Leena Doley further informed that a subsequent search of Barbhuiya’s vehicle revealed another pistol along with five rounds of ammunition. She assured that all necessary legal procedures are being followed in light of these findings.

The incident has sparked unrest among local residents. It should be noted, that the deceased Afzal Hussain Barbhuiya had a criminal record, with over seven cases registered against him, according to police sources.
