Cachar Police Thwart Multiple Attempts to Smuggle Illegal Burmese Areca Nuts via Silchar, apprehends 10
In a significant victory against illegal smuggling operations, Cachar Police successfully foiled multiple attempts made by miscreants to smuggle a large quantity of illegally procured Burmese Areca Nuts within the span of the last 24 hours. The notorious contraband, colloquially known as “Burmese Supari,” has been under the vigilant watch of the Cachar Police for some time.
The law enforcement officials managed to intercept a total of four vehicles, including an oil tanker, a 12-wheel truck, a 10-wheel truck, and a six-wheel truck, all of which were found to be loaded with concealed areca nuts. The police apprehended ten individuals suspected to be involved in the illicit smuggling of these nuts. This success is a result of the continuous efforts by the police, who were acting on credible information about a surge in activities related to the Burmese Nuts syndicate.
To elude the authorities’ scrutiny, the miscreants had ingeniously hidden the areca nuts in secret compartments within the trucks and tankers. Furthermore, in an attempt to divert suspicion, they had deliberately loaded the vehicles with seemingly innocuous materials like discarded plastic bottles and tin cans, which were less likely to attract thorough inspections.
The seized vehicles yielded a substantial haul of around 10,800 kilograms of suspected Burmese Areca Nuts. The individuals detained in connection with the smuggled consignment were identified as Jahid Ahmed Mazumdar, Hannan Hussain Laskar, Mujibur Rahman Laskar, a resident of Kalain, Sarimul Haque Barbhuiya, Sharif Uddin, Imranul Ahmed, Samsul Haque, Khulicherra resident Abjal Hussain, and Ratabari resident Khairul Hussain from Karimganj district.
Officials stationed at the Lailapur Police Patrol Post, responsible for monitoring the inter-state Assam-Mizoram border within Cachar district, revealed that the vehicles were intercepted during routine checks at the checkpoint. The drivers’ suspicious behavior prompted an in-depth search, leading to the eventual discovery and confiscation of the concealed contraband.
