Cachar Police to use NATRiP as temporary jail to keep "husbands" accused of child marriage in custody

The state-wide drive against husbands who have married brides before they attained their legitimate wedding age continues. The administration is finding it difficult to house illegal husbands arrested due to child marriage in Barak Valley. The authority is running short of space in cells. In order to cope with the situation, the Police administration has fetched a permission to build a temporary jail in Cachar District’s NATRiP (National Automotive Testing and R&D Infrastructure Project)

Within one-two days, the arrested husbands from three districts of Barak Valley will be shifted to the temporary jail facility at NATRiP. It is worth mentioning here that the Assam Police has already started using Goalpara Detention Camp as a temporary Jail. After that, NATRiP becomes the second such infrastructure to be allocated to house the arrested individuals accused of marrying a child.

As per Cachar SP Numal Mahatta, many people have been arrested for child marriage in Cachar as well as Barak Valley. Hence, it is getting difficult to accommodate them in prisons. For this reason, a temporary jail facility will be created in Jaffirbond’s Natrip located in Cachar district. There will be more people who will be arrested for child marriage in the coming days and keeping this in mind the temporary jail facility will be created.

Speaking to reporters Cachar SP Numal Mahatta said, “In the crackdown against child marriage we have arrested many people in Cachar district. We are running out of space in the designated jails. In the coming days more people will be arrested due to child marriage.”

He added, “Hence keeping this in mind, we have taken an order from the government to convert a section of Natrip to a temporary jail. The arrested illegal husbands from all three districts of Barak Valley will be housed in that temporary jail facility.”
